Return to Fishing Reports         Return to Home

Today I fished B-72 with four very nice folks who were the recipients of a trip I donated to an Oregon Mediation Society fundraiser.  Harold Christian and three of his grandsons, Gary, Steve, and Mark and I ventured down the river on a wet, windy, blustery morning.  Not many folks out today - maybe a dozen boats most of which were at anchor.  Garth slept in as usual and joined us about an hour after we got there.  He was escorting two folks (see fantasy report No. 6) to whom he had donated a trip.  However, I think he got his lines in first because while I was meticulously mending the herring perfectly on to the hook, he slammed whatever into the water - probably dried up herring from the last trip.  Imagine my shock at not immediately getting a pull down!  I decided to ply new waters while the tide was still going out strong and trolled down to Kalama.  As soon as I left, the bite must have turned on and was fantastic because even Garth was catching them.  Did he pick up his cell phone and call me to let me in on it?  NO!  Did he answer his cell phone when I tried to call him?  NO!  When I returned he had two regular-sized suicidal chinook which were apparently weighed on his new Hundai scale.  At any rate we proceeded to take two beautiful chinook (see pics below), one of which had the full compliment of appendages that Steve had to release.  The other (Gary's) was a 16.5 lb. beauty.  When Garth could no longer take the wind, wet, and cold, he cleverly told his clients that the bite was over so he could go home and get a nap.  My manly, stalwart crew of four opted to press on in spite of the weather and we dropped anchor in 22 feet of water (not in a hawg line) where we noticed most of the fish were being taken.  Mark got a good pull down on a QuickFish and landed it after a heroic fight.  We went three for three as opposed to Garth's two for five.  The second keeper was a nice 13.2 hatchery fish.
